MORE RALLY CAR'S We have more rally car fans checking into Craigatin House tonight for this weekends fantastic "Rally of Scotland" The spectacular high speed route for this year’s Rally of Scotland – the UK’s only round of the high profile Intercontinental Rally Challenge – takes place in Highland Perthshire. We have a stage just north of Pitlochry at Calvine and south at Dunkeld on Saturday, with the finale at Scone. See you in the woods!

The Enchanted Forest - Pitlochry

Perthshire Big Tree Country's award winning The Enchanted Forest sound and light show is a feast for your senses.

The 2011 event takes place in The Explorers Garden in Pitlochry and offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience the outdoors, at night and with spectacular imagery.



Using the woodland garden as a natural backdrop, you will experience a lighting show that is, quite simply, out of this world.

Make a night of it and eat at The Enchanted Forest.







The forest have brought in local caterer Fayre & Square to cook up a delicious savoury feast with the very best of Perthshire produce, brew up some delicious mulled wine, and prepare the freshest mini donuts you'll ever taste.

The Enchanted Forest is renowned to be Scotland's premier sound and light experience and attracts around 20,000 visitors every year.

This year's show, Transitions, is managed by the Highland Perthshire Community Interest Company.

The Enchanted Forest runs from 7th - 29th October 2011.

Craigatin House and Courtyard recently spent a very enjoyable afternoon on a Blair Atholl Safari.

The Blair Atholl Scheduled Land Rover Safaris operate daily just a few miles from Craigatin House.

The stunning scenery of Atholl remain constant throughout the year but their safaris change seasonally to take advantage of day light hours and wildlife behaviour.

The Famous Glenshee Devil's Elbow

Landscape photographer Colin Prior and BBC's Dougie Vipond continue their exploration of the ever-changing Scottish landscape. Dougie attempts to negotiate Glen Shee's notorious double hairpin bend known as the Devil's Elbow in a traditional form of transport which has royal approval.

The original photo they use shows the Queen’s Daimler being driving up the Devil’s elbow with Prince Philip at the wheel.

The road leads up to the Cairnwell Pass, the UK’s highest main road, travelling along the Devil’s elbow was quite an adventure.  This is how the old road looks today:

The sharp hairpin bends and the 1 in 3 gradient where not for the faint hearted.

In the 1960’s the road was straightened, but some of the original road is still visible next to the main road.

The Devil's Elbow was the name given to the double hairpin road as it steeply climbs through Gleann Beag near its highest point at the Cairnwell pass.

 

In the space of 5 miles (8 km) the height above sea level doubles from 335m (1100 feet) at Spittal of Glen Shee to 670m (2200 feet) at the highest point on the road from Blairgowrie to Braemar. The old road was bypassed by a wider modern road without such dramatic hairpin bends.

This historic road is a lonley forgotten place today, overgrown with weeds and slowly disappearing, yet still heavy with the memories of its earlier life.
