Our local Birnam Arts Centre has lots of exciting events this coming Spring.

Starting off in seasonal style they’ve got Burns – The Songwriter, swiftly followed with an illustrated talk, Ribbon of Wildness – Discovering the Watershed of Scotland.

Next on is the hilarious comedy The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists, then the Scottish Community Drama Association’s Festival of One Act Plays. Imaginative, interactive children’s theatre follows

with Starcatcher’s The Attic.

Next, The Shee, an all female band,

including a clog dancer!

The much aniticipated YolanDa Brown plus band, our
cover artist, follows on, then classical music & drama with Michael Lunts’ A Wanderer Fantasy.

The fabulous Stax of Motown return for a command performance and then, 1930s Berlin comes to Birnam Arts with the stunning Cabaret Chordelia. Finishing off proceedings is the Maxwell String Quartet with a fabulous programme of music to whet the appetite of the classically minded.

Craigatin House spent the afternoon at 1097metres above sea level on the Cairn Gorm mountain near Aviemore.

Minus 16 degrees with the wind chill did not deter loads of skiers and snowboarders making the most of the conditions.

There are few destinations in the world more beautiful than the Cairngorms National Park during winter. As the snow falls the range of activities to enjoy becomes all the more extensive.

For us, the hot chocolate in the mountain cafe

was a much better choice!

Whether you plan to ski down the Cairn Gorm Mountain or not, you’ll still want to scale its heights to enjoy the incredible views across Aviemore, Strathspey and further afield in Scotland.

We had a great day out mountain biking today at Laggan Wolftrax Mountain Bike Park.

Located just 35 miles north of Pitlochry, Wolftrax has everything from family track to black runs for seriously experienced mountain bikers.

Laggan Wolftrax has nearly 35km of the most up-to-date, year-round singletrack available in the country.

Set in the outstanding natural highland beauty of Strathmashie Forest, Wolftrax provides a green-graded beginners' trail, the thrills of a big-and-bermy Bike Park, a fast red-graded route packed with features and a black-graded trail that's possibly the most technical of its type in Scotland.

For novices and young children, the 4.8km green trail, featuring real singletrack, is a perfect introduction to mountain biking.

The Bike Park has 3.6km of trail. Novices can trundle or freewheel from top to bottom, but more skilled riders will rip up this route and find 'big air' opportunities all the way down! Not recommended for very young children.

The black route is 6.4km of tight, singletrack trail with multiple features! Watch out for serious drop offs, boulder fields and rock slabs aplenty!

Designed to be fast and flowing, the 15km red route is a fantastic experience in two sections, enjoyably testing and rideable.

People quite right associate Beatrix Potter with the Lake District, but her links with Highland Pertshire are equally as strong.

Beatrix developed her interest in wildlife, drawing and painting during her childhood summers spent at

Dalguise House (below today) near Dunkeld.

Beatrix Potters most famous book "The Tale of Peter Rabbit" was written in Dunkled (published in 1902) and 22 more books followed.

Other characters from the books were inspired by local worthies - the most famous being Mrs Tiggywinkle -

inspired by a Dalguise washerwoman!

The Famous Glenshee Devil's Elbow

Landscape photographer Colin Prior and BBC's Dougie Vipond continue their exploration of the ever-changing Scottish landscape. Dougie attempts to negotiate Glen Shee's notorious double hairpin bend known as the Devil's Elbow in a traditional form of transport which has royal approval.

The original photo they use shows the Queen’s Daimler being driving up the Devil’s elbow with Prince Philip at the wheel.

The road leads up to the Cairnwell Pass, the UK’s highest main road, travelling along the Devil’s elbow was quite an adventure. This is how the old road looks today:

The sharp hairpin bends and the 1 in 3 gradient where not for the faint hearted.

In the 1960’s the road was straightened, but some of the original road is still visible next to the main road.

The Devil's Elbow was the name given to the double hairpin road as it steeply climbs through Gleann Beag near its highest point at the Cairnwell pass.

In the space of 5 miles (8 km) the height above sea level doubles from 335m (1100 feet) at Spittal of Glen Shee to 670m (2200 feet) at the highest point on the road from Blairgowrie to Braemar. The old road was bypassed by a wider modern road without such dramatic hairpin bends.

This historic road is a lonley forgotten place today, overgrown with weeds and slowly disappearing, yet still heavy with the memories of its earlier life.

Pitlochry to Killiecrankie and back!

Craigatin House & Courtyard Visits Stanley Mills

We've just returned from a fantastic afternoon at Stanley Mills,

an old mill just a few miles south of Pitlochry.

Stanley Mills is one the best-preserved relics of the 18th-century Industrial Revolution.

It was established as a cotton mill by local merchants, with support from the English cotton baron Richard Arkwright.

Textiles were produced here for 200 years.

The mills were built in 1786 at a hairpin bend in the River Tay, where tremendous water-power was available. Machinery was powered initially by water wheels, and latterly by electricity generated by water-powered turbines.

As the market changed and new technologies developed, buildings were added, adapted, expanded, shut down, reopened and demolished.

The Barley Bree restaurant in Muthill, near Crieff.

This fantastic little restaurant has two red rosettes for its food and is definately worth the 60 minute journey from Pitlochry.

A fantastic 10k road race from Pitlochry to Killiecrankie and back

Sunday 25th September 2011

Route Information

1) The race starts outside Fishers Hotel at 1.00pm.
2) The route takes you north, out of the town along the Pitlochry to Killiecrankie road.
3) Follow the road past the Garry Bridge, pass the Faskally Wood entrance and the Faskally Caravan Park.
4) Around 1km after the Garry Bridge, you will be directed to take a sharp left onto a downhill path, to
cross a foot bridge across the Garry River.
5) After crossing the foot bridge, turn left and follow a forest track next to the river. At the top of this
track you will find a short set of steps, climb these until you get to the water station.
6) From the water station you will cross the Garry Bridge and turn right to return to town on the same
route as the outward leg.
7) Enter Pitlochry and turn right into Rie-Achan Road. Then turn left behind the Strathgarry Hotel and cross towards Pitlochry
Station and continue along the lane behind Fishers Hotel.
8) Turn left at the end of the lane and travel up the hill towards Atholl Road, turn left.
9) Finish outside Fishers Hotel.
